FAQ

Plain answers for careful memory keepers.

A permanent place for the questions families ask before they trust Kinlet with photos, voice notes, private stories, AI help, and printed keepsakes.

Getting started

The first steps should feel small enough to do today.

Do I need a complete archive before Kinlet is useful?

No. Kinlet is built around one memory at a time. You can start with a single prompt, photo, voice note, or family story, then add more when life allows.

What kind of memories can I save?

You can save everyday stories, milestones, photos, voice notes, scanned handwriting, and book drafts. Kinlet is flexible enough for pregnancy, first year, adoption, pets, holidays, love letters, caregiving, and the ordinary days between.

Can I use Kinlet without making a printed book?

Yes. Printing is optional. You can use Kinlet as a private family journal, a photo and story archive, or a place to prepare keepsakes later.

Free vs Pro and billing

Start free, then upgrade when the archive needs more room.

Is the free plan really usable?

Yes. Free lets you begin a family journal, try AI help, upload media, and preview a keepsake draft. It has limits so storage and AI costs stay sustainable.

What does Kinlet Pro add?

Pro adds more storage, broader AI usage, voice and handwriting capture tools, and full Studio access for book creation. It is meant for families whose archive is growing past the free limits.

What happens if I cancel Pro?

Your memories remain yours. If your account is over free limits after cancellation, you may need Pro again before adding more media or using Pro-only tools.

Are printed books included in Pro?

No. Pro covers the software tools. Physical books, prints, taxes, and shipping are priced separately at checkout so you only pay for the keepsakes you choose to order.

AI and user voice

AI helps organize and polish. It should not take over the memory.

Does AI write my memories for me?

No. Kinlet can suggest prompts, transcribe voice notes, polish drafts, and help shape a book layout, but your original words stay central and editable.

Can I edit or reject AI suggestions?

Yes. AI output is a draft or suggestion, not the final word. You can change it, remove it, or keep your original wording.

Will my family stories sound generic?

That is exactly what Kinlet is designed to avoid. The product should help you preserve your voice, family details, and context instead of replacing them with stock scrapbook copy.

Privacy and ownership

Family memories need clear boundaries and plain language.

Who owns the memories I add to Kinlet?

You do. Kinlet is a tool for collecting, shaping, and ordering your family memories. Your private archive is not public by default.

Can other people see my journal entries?

No one gets journal access just because they are family. Sharing is album-based: invited viewers can see the photos you share with them, while your journal stays yours.

Do you need sensitive family details for Kinlet to work?

No. You choose what to save. Kinlet can work with small, ordinary memories and does not require a perfect timeline, a traditional family structure, or private details you do not want to record.

Photos, voice notes, and storage

Use the formats you already have, without turning it into a project marathon.

How much media can I store?

Free includes 400 MiB of storage and 25 photo uploads per month. Generated files such as export ZIPs and print-ready PDFs count toward storage, even after download links expire. Kinlet Pro includes 100 GiB for families with more photos, recordings, and keepsake drafts.

Can I use voice notes instead of typing?

Yes. Voice notes are part of the capture flow. Kinlet can help turn recordings into editable text so the memory does not have to start as a polished paragraph.

Can I upload videos?

Yes, with plan limits. Free supports videos up to 2 minutes each. Pro supports videos up to 5 minutes each.

Books, prints, shipping, and checkout

Printed keepsakes are optional and priced when you are ready.

How much do printed books cost?

Hardcover books start at about CA$28 for 30 pages. The final price depends on the book options, page count, taxes, shipping, and provider availability at checkout.

Can I preview a book before ordering?

Yes. Kinlet is designed so you can review and edit the keepsake before placing a print order. You should not have to order before you trust the result.

Why are shipping and print costs separate?

Physical production costs vary by order, destination, and provider. Keeping them separate makes the subscription about the software tools and checkout about the specific keepsake.

Shared albums, comments, and likes

Let family enjoy shared photos without turning them into co-authors.

Can family members participate in journaling?

No. The journal belongs to the author. Family members can view shared albums when invited, but they cannot write in your journal or add memories to it.

What can people do in a shared album?

Invited viewers can see the album photos, leave comments, and react with likes. It is meant for family enjoyment and conversation, not collaborative editing of the archive.

Can viewers print keepsakes from a shared album?

Yes, if the album author allows it. Keepsake creation is enabled by default, so viewers can make their own prints or books from shared album content unless the author turns that permission off.

Can viewers download the original photo files?

Only if the album owner enables original downloads. Viewing, commenting, liking, and making an authorized keepsake do not automatically grant access to original files.

How do SMS prompts work?

Kinlet can send gentle prompts by SMS so the author can capture a memory in the moment. Free includes one 2-week SMS trial that starts when scheduled texts are enabled; ongoing SMS prompts require Kinlet Pro.

Will Kinlet make my family feel behind?

It should not. The product is meant to lower pressure. A shared album comment, a like, or one printed keepsake can be meaningful without asking everyone to become the family archivist.
