TL;DR: A pregnancy journal is a few honest sentences plus the photos you already take, not a daily essay. Use the prompts below when you have a spare minute. Skip medical advice, skip forced gratitude, skip weeks that were only appointments. Kinlet's pregnancy journal is built as a spine of months: bump photos, recaps, optional shower pages. You can start late. Empty early months are allowed.

What should you write in a pregnancy journal?

Write what you will not remember later: the first flutter, the appointment that ran late, how the bump looked in month six, who showed up, what you ate at 3pm because nothing else stayed down. Skip anything that belongs in a patient portal.

If you are the partner, write what you saw and did. The prompts do not have to be first-person body questions. Set whose pregnancy it is, then answer from your side of the room.

For a longer "why keep this at all" take, see the existing pregnancy journal ideas post. This page is the question list.

How often should you journal during pregnancy?

Whenever a week has a scene worth keeping. Weekly is plenty. Daily is optional and often dies in the first trimester. A monthly recap plus one bump photo already makes a chapter.

Kinlet reminds you once you are in that month, not a week early. That is on purpose. A prompt that arrives before the month starts becomes homework.

What are good first-trimester pregnancy journal prompts?

The first trimester is often private, physical, and short on photogenic moments. Prompts that still work:

  • What I knew, suspected, or decided not to tell yet.
  • The first person I told, and how that conversation actually went.
  • What this week did to sleep, food, and work.
  • A detail from an early appointment I do not want living only in a portal message.
  • How I want to talk about this pregnancy later, including if the story stays small.

You can leave weeks blank. A journal that starts at week 12 is still a pregnancy journal.

If this chapter followed treatment, you may want IVF journal ideas for the clinic stretch, then these prompts for the months after.

What are good second-trimester pregnancy journal prompts?

This is when bump photos start to mean something as a grid. Prompts:

  • Same wall, same shirt, or whatever ritual we are actually keeping this month.
  • The first time I felt movement, and where I was.
  • A craving, a smell, a food I cannot look at: one concrete example.
  • Who has opinions about the name, the nursery, the birth plan, and which opinions I am ignoring.
  • A day that felt ordinary and still worth keeping (grocery store, commute, nap on the couch).

Nine monthly bump slots make a timeline even if the recaps are short. Tap an empty month and set the photo when you have it. See bump photos in Highlights.

If you have one spare minute this week, start free and answer a single prompt. The book can wait until there are pages.

What are good third-trimester pregnancy journal prompts?

The last stretch is logistics mixed with a very specific kind of waiting.

  • What I packed, and what I refused to pack.
  • A conversation with a clinician, doula, or friend that changed how I think about the birth.
  • How the house looks right now: the chair, the bag, the crib that is or is not built.
  • What I want the first day with them to include, knowing plans move.
  • A letter to the baby, or to my partner, that I might not send yet.

Leave room for the arrival to be its own chapter. Birth story, measurements, and optional NICU fields live on Arrival, not on a prenatal recap. If that is part of your story, keeping a NICU journal can wait until you need it.

What if I am the partner, not the pregnant person?

Write the waiting room, the grocery run, the way you learned the kick count, the joke that landed, the night you both could not sleep. Kinlet lets you set who is pregnant so prompts are not all body questions aimed at you. Two people can keep the same pregnancy journal without turning it into a shared Google Doc fight.

Can you start a pregnancy journal late?

Yes. Fill the month you are in. Add earlier bump photos if they exist on your phone. Write one paragraph that covers "what the first months were" instead of faking weekly entries. Late is still on time. The same idea continues after birth: how to start a baby journal late.

What should you leave out of a pregnancy journal?

Leave out anything you would not want a child to read unedited, unless you plan to keep that volume private. Leave out other people's medical details. Leave out advice dressed up as memory. Appointments can live here as stories: who was in the room, what you walked to the car thinking. They should not live here as a care plan.

Kinlet is private by default. Shared albums are a separate choice. The journal does not become visible because you invited someone to a bump-photo album.

How does a pregnancy journal become a book?

Monthly recaps and bump photos already know they want a page. Daily journal entries fill the gaps. When you are ready, Studio lays out what you kept. You edit the awkward line. You change a theme. You order a hardcover, or you wait. Print is not the journal ending.

FAQ

Is this medical advice? No. It is memory-keeping. If something feels wrong, call your clinician, not a prompt list.

Do I need a prompt every day? No. A monthly recap and a bump photo already make a chapter.

Can I keep a pregnancy journal after loss, or after a pause? You can write what you need and stop when you need. There is no streak. Skip any prompt that asks you to pretend the story is simple.

What if we used IVF or another path? There is an IVF Journey module for the clinic chapter. Pregnancy Journey can still hold the months after, if that is the path you are on.

Will AI write this for me? No. In Kinlet, AI may help pick questions and later suggest layout. Words in the book stay yours.

Pregnancy is a long wait with a lot of small facts. Prompts are only useful if they fit the week you actually had. Keep one sentence. Keep one photo. Open the next month when it starts.
